Creekside Plaza, 2161 Allston Way, Berkeley
This new 5-story retail/ residential structure on a challenging site incorporated nearly all building materials. The building had to bridge a large concrete culvert that drains Strawberry Creek from the U.C. Berkeley Campus to the Bay and runs diagonally across the site.
The design team also had to preserve and protect an historic brick building on the adjacent property line and an old growth oak tree at the front of the site. The soft soils and the proximity to a type A fault warranted a deep (up to 70′) drilled pier foundation. The first and second floors consist of concrete slab and beams and the upper levels consist of TrusJoist I-joists, light-gauge steel walls and eccentrically braced steel frames.
